They will discuss urbanization, clear cutting, hurricanes, floods, crop failures, etc. Students will also discuss the concept that change is inevitable and universal.

Lesson Plan

Week 20 - Students will learn how the natural environment and the human impact on the environment affects individuals and populations. They will discuss urbanization, clear cutting, hurricanes, floods, crop failures, etc. Students will also discuss the concept that change is inevitable and universal.
Vocabulary Words
inevitable: unable to be avoided
universal: present or existing everywhere
climate: the average weather conditions of a place or region over a period of time
extinct: no longer in existence
weather: the state of the atmosphere around Earth, e.g., sunny, rainy, cold, hot
CC ELA L.3.4a and CC ELA L.3.4d
Have students locate sentences containing the five vocabulary words in this week’s lesson and read the sentences to a friend. Have students discuss the meaning of the vocabulary words using the sentences in the article that relate to the word. Provide beginning dictionaries for students have difficulty defining the words.
Literature Selections
“Weather and Climate: Geography Facts and Experiments” by Barbara Taylor
“Weird Weather: Everything You Didn’t Want to Know About Climate Change But
Probably Should Find Out” by Kate Evans

“Climate Change” by Mike Unwin
“What Happened to the Dinosaurs?: A Book about Extinction” by Rebecca Olien
Integrated Activities
Math:
  • Ask students to keep track of the weather for 10 days. At the end of 10 days, have them make a graph of the information.
  • Next, ask students to put their information into fractions and decimals: What fraction of the 10 days did it rain? How would you say or write that fraction as a decimal? Ask the same questions for different weather conditions.
  • Have students make up at least three questions to ask a friend about their graphs. Questions should be written on lined paper with the answers on the back. Discuss how to make up a question. Explain that the questions must contain enough information that their friends are able to answer them by looking at the graph.
Research/Reading:
  • Ask students to research one of the following areas of the rainforest: animals, plants, clear-cutting, people, insects, or medicines. Have them present the information in an interesting and clear way.
  • Ask students to do research on an extinct animal.
  • Have students do research on a natural disaster.
  • If you live in an area of substantial population growth or decline, ask students to research the change in population in your community over 20 years.
CC ELA RI.3.9
  • Ask students to do research on an extinct animal. Compare and contrast the reasons given for the extinction of several animals according to the research sites and this week’s lesson.
Humans and Their Environment (Pages 2-3, Student Edition)
CC ELA RI.3.3: According to the article, “greenhouse gases can cause global warming.” If you were the mayor of a large city, what laws or changes would you make to help reduce greenhouse gases? Use several details from the article to support your answer.
How could global warming change the medical field in the future if clear cutting continues in the rain forests around the world and especially the Amazon Rainforest in South America?
Explain the effects greenhouse gases have on animals that live in areas where global warming is taking place. Underline the sentences in the article that provide evidence for your answer.
How Coyote Stole Fire (Page 3, Student Edition)
CC ELA RL.3.1: After reading How Coyote Stole Fire, answer the following questions with a friend and write some questions of your own for other classmates to answer. Use sentences from the story to support your answers.
  1. Why did coyote run as fast as he could?
  2. Based on the story, what two words do you think best describe coyote?
  3. What are the events that led to man being grateful to coyote?
  4. How do the fire beings’ actions affect the story?
Crossword Puzzle (Page 4, Student Edition)
CC ELA RI.3.7: After completing the crossword puzzle, find the evidence for your responses by circling your answers in this week’s lesson. Number your responses in the article to correspond with the crossword puzzle. Discuss your answers with a friend.
Vocabulary and Word Games (Page 4, Student Edition)
CC ELA L.3.1i: After highlighting the proper nouns, review the sentences containing those nouns and identify the sentence type (i.e., simple, compound, or complex). With a partner, form additional sentences representing each type using one or more of the proper nouns in each sentence.
Think and Review Questions (Page 4, Student Edition)
CC ELA SL.3.4: After you complete the Think and Review Questions on Page 4, select one of the questions that interests you and reread the selection containing your answer. In small groups, give a short oral report on the article and include the main idea and supporting details.
Gifted Connection:
Ask your gifted students to make a documentary about global warming. This can be in the form of a movie or a news program. The documentary should include causes, effects and possible solutions. Ask students to make a rubric before starting their project. What would work that is above average look like? What would average work look like? What would poor work look like?
English Language Learners:
Create study guides to help English language learners as they read through the newspaper.
Ask another student to read the newspaper with the ELL student.
Allow ELL students to tape record answers to questions.
Provide headphones, a less formal work area (like a comfortable chair) or a study carrel.
Assessment
CC ELA RI.3.1 : After students answer the multiple choice questions, have them find the evidence for their responses in the Studies Weekly student edition by circling the sentences that support their answers. Students should number the sentences in the text to correspond to each multiple choice question for easy access during collaborative discussions.
